On the day of the procedure: Preparing for the Procedure What You Need to Do After the Procedure: Post Circumcision Care
The wound is usually dry and non-painful after a few days, yet will remain red for 7 – 10 days. As part of the healing process, a yellow film will then develop over the penis. After the bandages have fallen off he will be ready for bathing as usual. If the bandage has not dropped off, Dr Saddik will remove them at the follow up check-up' Please note that bandages may develop an odour the longer they remain on and this is normal. We recommend that you return with your baby for a check-up a few days after the procedure. Dr Saddik is always available to review your baby as often as you feel necessary. If you have any worries, please contact us. For about one (1) week after the procedure, you will need to place a piece of gauze with a dab of Vaseline at the tip of your baby’s penis at each nappy change other than that, treat your baby as normal. It is most important to bring him back after the circumcision has healed (about two – three weeks after the procedure). Don’t neglect this. Use pain relief medication such as paracetamol for infants, only if needed. If the wound bleeds during the first 24 hours after the procedure, apply pressure with a clean cloth for 10 minutes and contact the surgery on the number shown in "Contact Us".

Advice to parents - What now ? We strongly recommend to avoid bath for next few days and apply drops of olive oil to the dressing as it helps good healing, oil is not sticky, and make it easy to remove the dressing gauze. The oil is mainly an added precaution against infection, but being greasy, it also acts as a cushion between the head of the penis and the ring to minimise rubbing. The oil should be applied down the inside of the dressing gauze ring, round the head of his penis and round the outside as well. The ring will separate of its own accord. That usually takes between three and seven days, although it can come off sooner, it can hold on longer. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, you simply continue applying the oil for a day or two after the ring comes off. Then bath your baby in warm salt bath on the third day, then it would fell off by itself. After the circumcision has healed After the circumcision has healed it is usually necessary to separate the shaft skin from round the head of the penis. If that is not done, smegma  can accumulate under the adherent skin. That is why it is so important that he should return for review after the circumcision has healed. Check for fresh bleeding, and if this occurs in the first 24 hours, please phone immediately because it just shouldn’t happen. Bleeding after the first 24 hours is usually only a drop or two and of no consequence. The penis usually does get red and swollen. That is of no concern – it is just part of the normal healing process. The baby will have two (2) layers of bandages on his penis. For some babies, the bandages will stay on longer which is no problem, If the bandage has not dropped off after 2 days, Dr Saddik may remove them at the follow-up check up. The outer layer suppresses bleeding immediately after circumcision. The inner layer is a Bacteriostatic and Haemostatic Dressing (Jelonet/Kaltostat), Leave the dressing around the shaft of the penis in place for 48 hours (only sponge baby - DO NOT BATH). After 48 hours, give baby a worm bath with some salt  and gently remove the gauze. After the dressing is removed, the incision may be gently washed with mild, warm salt water.
